100 N. Cherry Building
Winston-Salem, NC
The roof replacement project at 100 N. Cherry St was an EPDM ballast shift. The project required moving the existing ballast so the Allied Roofing crew could remove the old membrane and install a new 60-mil Elevate EPDM roofing membrane over the existing insulation. Several challenges were encountered during this project. One major challenge was the building's location in downtown Winston-Salem, approximately 120 feet high. This necessitated the use of a third-party crane company, which was employed only three times throughout the entire project. Another challenge was the nature of the ballast shift itself; ballast roof systems, unlike modern roof systems, demand significant labor to move the rock for removing the existing roof and installing the new one, as well as for tracking materials across the roof.
